Sleaford Town Junior Football Club returned on Tuesday morning from their visit to Marquette, France over the Easter weekend to compete in a football tournament.
COMMENTS FROM WILL COOKE
"The Easter weekend saw STJFC take the two Under 10 and Under 11B sides to the annual football tournament in Sleaford's twinning town of Marquette-lez-Lille, France. The tournament has become a regular event for the Club, but with over 70 players, parents and supporters this was the largest trip that the Juniors have organised. Having travelled to France on the Saturday the teams stayed in Roubaix before travelling to Marquette on the Sunday with the Under 10 teams first to compete in a 7-aside tournament. The competition consisted of two leagues of 7 teams playing in a round robin basis and then against each other in a play off round. Both teams were drawn against the event organisers and hosts Marquette in the first league match and these games were found to be a steep learning curve with the rules which included back passes and offside which neither team had encountered in their local leagues and unfortunately the teams lost 1-0 and 2-0 respectively. However, with renewed vigour both teams continued to develop well and following the league matches against local teams FC Wambrechies, FC Tourcoing, FSM Quesnoy, Dourges and US Pecquencourt the two Sleaford sides were drawn against each other in the play off match. The U10(1) side were victorious with a narrow 1-0 victory and both teams were rewarded with a tournament trophy afterwards. In addition to this the U10(2) side were awarded the tournament Fair Play trophy. The event was won by FC Tourcoing who produced some outstanding individual and team displays and were deserved champions.
The evening turned into a fine social occasion with the management, players and parents enjoying the French hospitality, which was followed by a trip to the local ten pin bowling alley.
The following day saw the U11 team play in their 9-aside tournament, where back passes were not allowed but the offside rule stood, something which the French omitted to inform the English! The team played their league games against local sides ACS Comines, US Marquette, CJ Verlinghem and US Marly. Following a fine league display the team won their play off match comfortably against US Beuvy to finish 9th in the overall competition, with local team Marquette finishing runners up to FC Wambrechies.
The Club would like to thank all those that supported the teams prior to the event in their fundraising, but particular thanks are due to; Sleafordian Coaches, Pygott & Crone, CJ Bolland Produce Merchants, SIMBA, United Fillings, Greatorex Haulage, The Solo Club, Moore & Scrupps, Beckside Barbers, Horne Bros Carpets, Scoffers Fish & Chips, Keith Dolby Jewellers and Mick Robinson Electrical for their kind donations, without which the trip would not have been possible.
There is now talk of a number of the teams returning to Sleaford to compete in the 2011 5 a-side tournament when it is hoped the hospitality shown will be returned.
Next season will see STJFC enter two sides in the Under 11 Mid Lincs league which will mean the game changing from 7 to 11-aside and more players will be required. If you are interested in being part of STJFC and would like to be considered for next season's squads please contact team managers Kev Waddingham (07808 204414) or Will Cooke (07764 356921) for further information.
